I watched politicians and activists gathering around the tiny Christian community in India, offering sympathy, support and some splendid speeches.

“We are with you,” they declared.

I smiled, because politicians who say they are with you usually mean they hope you will soon be with them, preferably inside a polling booth.

Many may be sincere. Others may have discovered that defending Christians produces good headlines, international attention and perhaps a few more votes. Their support is welcome, but the Christian community must never mistake a temporary political umbrella for permanent protection.

Umbrellas disappear when the weather changes.

But we possess something infinitely more powerful.

We have the Word of God.

“For the word of God is alive and active,” says Hebrews chapter four, verse twelve, “Sharper than any double edged sword.”

Alive and active!

Not an old book gathering dust beside the bed. Not a collection of comforting sentences read hurriedly on Sunday morning. Not a decorative volume opened only when the priest visits.

The Word is alive.

Before activists arrived, the Word was there. Before political parties were formed, the Word was there. Before rulers climbed onto their thrones and began believing they would remain there forever, the Word was there.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

What then should Christians do when frightened, threatened or made to feel unwanted in their own country?

Study the Word.

Read it in the morning. Read it before sleeping. Read it when fear enters the room. Read it when powerful voices tell you that you are weak because you are few.

And learn its verses by heart.

When you speak God’s promises aloud, you are not reminding God of something He has forgotten. God does not misplace His promises like a politician misplaces an election manifesto.

You are reminding yourself.

You are telling your trembling heart, “God has not given me a spirit of fear.”

You are telling your anxious mind, “The Lord is my shepherd.”

You are telling the darkness, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Jesus understood the authority of the spoken Word. When the centurion asked Him to heal his servant, he said, “Just speak the word, and my servant will be healed.”

Just speak the Word!

Political friends may stand with us today and vanish tomorrow. Governments may rise and fall. Laws may intimidate. Mobs may shout.

But the Word remains.

So open your Bible. Study it. Memorise it. Speak it over your children, your home, your church and yourself.

You may be part of a minuscule community, but when you speak the Word, heaven stands behind every syllable you utter…!
