The Sad Train of Donegal..!

It was a choice between visiting a castle in Donegal, Ireland or going to a train museum. I love trains and decided I’d prefer the train museum, but it was a different museum from what my wife and I had expected. It was a museum about a train line that ran from the town all the way through the country till the train reached the port

But do you know what the train was called? It was called the ‘Sad Train”. Because most of the youngsters boarded the train to go across to the port that would take them to America. Millions left, and many were never seen again.

But I know that for they who went it was a train ride of opportunity, and I wonder what your train ride through life is? Here’s a poem I love, that will help you wonder how you feel as you go through life. Is it a sad ride or a happy ride? Are you looking back with sadness at the Donegal you’ve left behind, at your past or are you looking forward to the future which awaits you?

Some folks ride the train of life, looking out the rear,
Watching miles of life roll by, And marking every year.

They sit in sad remembrance, Of wasted days gone by,
And curse their life for what it was, And hang their head and cry.

But I don’t concern myself with that, I took a different vent,
I look forward to what life holds, And not what has been spent.

So strap me to the engine, As securely as I can be,
I want to be out on the front, To see what I can see.

I want to feel the winds of change, Blowing in my face,
I want to see what life unfolds, As I move from place to place.

I want to see what’s coming up, Not looking at the past,
Life’s too short for yesterdays, It moves along too fast.

So if the ride gets bumpy, While you are looking back,
Go up front, and you may find, Your life has jumped the track.

It’s alright to remember, That’s part of history,
But up front’s where it’s happening, There’s so much mystery.

The enjoyment of living, Is not where we have been,
It’s looking ever forward, To another year and ten.

It’s searching all the byways, Never should you refrain,
For if you want to live your life, You gotta drive the train.

Yes my friends if you want to live your life fully, achieve your goals and reach the heights you have set for yourself then you need to drive your train, sit in the driving seat and never think of life as a ‘sad train’ but make it a happy ride, as many who left Donegal found out…!

  1. Thank you Bob for showing that Engine driver’s perspective. Forward-looking with fresh air on his face. No worry about any backpack . New sights, fresh smells, unheard voices……

  2. Wonderful! While looking to the excitement of the future, looking back just enough, is his-story too! Wise words.

  3. Today is a present. So we must dream today to keep from brooding about the past being lost today. We know God holds our future and present. He held us in His mighty hand yesterday and where there’sLife there is hope.Hope in theLord of Life to rejoice today.God is Love, the Light,Truth and Way.Jesus is God.He said so.He isTheRock to stand on today to see tomorrow.
