Hope! That delightful ‘cloud with a silver lining’ we cling to like a cat dangling from a tree branch, convinced a divine fire brigade will show up any moment.
Let’s talk about this verse—Isaiah 40:31. A wonderful line about soaring on wings like eagles, running without getting tired, and walking without fainting. Sounds like a biblical gym membership, doesn’t it? No more panting after climbing three flights of stairs! No more regretting that extra dosa! Just hope in the Lord, and poof—you’re in the fitness level of a celestial marathon runner.
But let’s be honest here. Some of us have been hoping for years. Hoping the boss will finally recognize our brilliance and promote us. Hoping our bank balance will magically multiply like loaves and fishes. Hoping that one day we’ll wake up with the strength of a teenager instead of a tired old man. And yet, here we are, still trudging through life, coffee in one hand, exhaustion in the other, wondering when our eagle wings are going to sprout.
And I hear you say, “But Bob, it’s not just about feeling good! It’s about facing life with faith!”
Absolutely! But let’s be clear—faith is not a vending machine where you pop in a prayer and out comes a miracle. No, my friend, sometimes you put in that prayer and get… silence. Maybe a trial. Possibly an even bigger problem. And that’s where the real magic happens! Because, you see, faith isn’t about avoiding trouble; it’s about standing still in the middle of it, looking up, and saying, “Alright, let’s do this! Preferably, Lord, without me hyperventilating!”
Now, about trusting God. That’s the tricky bit, isn’t it? Because it requires us to accept that maybe, just maybe, we are not the supreme strategists of our own lives. We like to think we are. We make plans. We set goals. We map out our futures.
And then life takes one look at our to-do list and bursts into laughter. Ever tried planning a perfect day, only to find yourself stuck in traffic for three hours while your GPS mocks you with “recalculating”? Exactly.
But here’s the beauty of it all. When we finally stop trying to be the general manager of the universe and start leaning into that hope—genuinely leaning, not just using it as a backup plan—something shifts. No, we don’t become invincible, we become unshakable. We don’t always get what we want, but we get the strength to handle what we’ve got. And on the best days, we even learn to laugh at our disasters, knowing Someone up there is orchestrating something far bigger than our tiny, panicked minds can comprehend.
So, my dear weary, astrology- and strategy-dependent friends (that also includes me):
Keep the faith.
Keep the hope.
And if you ever find yourself wondering when those eagle wings are going to kick in, just remember—soaring doesn’t always begin with a dramatic leap.
Sometimes, it starts with simply standing still…!
