Solomon, Wisdom and Terrible Consequences..!

Yesterday I had written about Chief Justice Chandrachud and his tryst with faith and prayer over a judgement he made. I had brought in King Solomon as an example of a person in power who had asked God for wisdom, and had used that same wisdom in memorable judgements.

I had also mentioned that there was a caveat attached to it, God had given him his wish, but had told Solomon that there was a condition attached to his blessing, “ I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart….. if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands.”

Sadly, Solomon did not keep the condition that God had made with him. He strayed from God, and it was just a matter of time before Solomon had to face God again. This time, it was an angry God who told him that he would have to pay and be punished for what he was doing.

What had Solomon done?

Solomon was obviously an attractive man and it’s mentioned in the Bible that even the Queen of Sheba came to visit him. There’s no doubt he was quite charismatic with all the wisdom and intelligence he was endowed with.

There are many of us too, who are also charismatic and have personalities which are found to be attractive, and though it could be a blessing to have such, in it also lies a problem.

Because that same wisdom and charisma could be a source of attraction to those of the opposite gender who fall for these God given attributes. Some who have received these gifts of wisdom and intelligence or creativity, love the attention. Solomon did and soon had a thousand women at his beck and call: three hundred wives and seven hundred concubines and they led him away from God.

The same way we can also be entrapped by this weakness not just of sexual sin, but also pride and arrogance.

How do we handle this? I believe that every moment one has to acknowledge that his or her gift is a blessing from God, that every moment the person has to point to his Creator as the one who has given it to him. If he or she doesn’t do this, what they are actually lifting higher is themselves and not God.

But it doesn’t end here; more terrible, is what God does when we fall into this temptation. In Solomon‘s case, God saw that the kingdom he had inherited from his father King David was taken away from his heirs on his death, and the twelve tribes of Israel were torn apart. So let us be careful, even as we pray for blessings, that we use those blessings diligently because the consequences of misusing them are terrible..!

  1. The Bible says that Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord and that was the end of Solomon. Here is a warning that if we don’t use our God given talents properly, we may destroy ourselves like Samson who not only killed himself but also the entire crowd gathered in the auditorium.

  2. God gives us gifts for the good of the people andHis glory. Pride goes before a fall if we forget we’re only stewards of His gifts and owners of blessings He bestows whenHis purpose for our life is fulfilled by us
