It was a gathering in the country of a billion and a quarter,
There were murmurs and sharp words, but no smiles, chuckles or laughter.
The people were fed up, all those who’d gathered there,
“What did you do for us?” they cried to those who sat on the chair.
“We gave our vote, and hoped that you, would do something for us,
We were impressed by dreams you sold and all the other fuss.
You said there would be jobs and perks, for all of us today!
But looks like all we ever saw, were your smirks coming our way!”
The representatives elected, didn’t look their voters in the eye,
“We cannot understand,” they whispered, “why you weep and why you cry,
We have done so much for you, if you’d only look around and see,
The roads we have renamed, and built a temple pedigree!
We have looked long and hard and seen, what people loved to eat,
And banned that item from your menu, in one absolute feat.
We’ve emptied your wallets, of cash you once carried,
And now to the plastic credit card, we see you’re all married!”
But the people, they weren’t convinced and started to shout again,
“You’ve given pain, not too much gain and filled us with disdain.
What happened to the fifteen lakhs you promised in our banks?
Now we don’t even have the money to fill our petrol tanks!
What happened to the Ache Din, you went on saying we’d get.
Give us back our normal days, before e’en that we forget.
Instead of bringing peace, in a country like ours today
You’ve let hate and disharmony, in people’s minds hold sway.
The representatives elected, didn’t look their voters in the eye,
“We cannot understand,” they whispered, “why you weep and why you cry,
We have done so much for you, if you’d only look around and see,
The roads we have renamed, and built a temple pedigree!
We have looked long and hard and seen, what people loved to eat,
And banned that item from your menu, in one memorable feat.
We’ve emptied your wallets, of cash you once carried
And now to the credit card, we see you’re all married!”
The people sighed, some of them cried, some turned their faces to one side.
All of them knew, all countrywide, that they had been both fooled and lied,
What fools we are they thought to think that rosy days would come,
When all that was ever planned was give roses to some chosen some.
But as they hold inked finger up, those billion and a quarter,
Suddenly from those on the chair, there’s fear, no smiles or laughter..!

It is difficult for any politician to please all people who always want of something, very much aware of Rights but not bothered of their Duties.
True …. Distractions, visual exaggeration, divisive politics have eroded our peaceful progress
Woah….awesome.
Your stunning verses collate circumstances
Of political promises and stances!
Of “inked fingers” as a game of numbers.
Did we blunder? Do we have to surrender?
Of how gullible voters take the bait,
And seal the dreams of billions, at stake.
How power battles continue to clash
Between opponents whose ideologies mismatch!
All promises go down the drain,
Alas!we, mere mortals, have voted in vain.
Splendid verses penned, indeed!
You are the FINEST, I concede.
Thank you Shylaja.
There are very large numbers of problems in India. Over population corruption indiscipline in all spheres unemployment shortage of electricity water fruits grains vegetables which results in soaring cost of living. Its not easy for any political party or leaders to find a solution.Unless we decrease our requirements and adopt simple and honest living things will become more difficult.
Right sir.It is easy to blame politician than retrospecting ourselves!
