Create a Peaceful Park In Your Head..!

“How peaceful it’s in here!” said a friend of mine as he sat in my living room.
“Peaceful?” I asked surprised.
My friend went to the window and opened another shutter, “Can you hear the rustling of the leaves? You are so lucky Bob, you have a peepul tree just outside and what a sound, a thousand leaves whispering in the breeze!”
“Still yourself!” said my friend. “Cut off all the other sounds like a superior mike and listen only to these peaceful sounds!” I did, and have learnt to do it everyday and enjoy the trees speaking gently even as they silently show me different colours of green.
My daughter who lives in Manhattan, New York, had spoken to me later, “Dad, I wish I hadn’t shifted from my previous flat next to Central Park! From this new house I have to walk quite far to get there!”
I remembered her previous flat, all we had to do was get out of her home, cross the road and into Central Park. We had spent many beautiful moments, she and I, as we had traversed the park together, sat by the lake, heard a soprano sing rapturous melodies, watched the swans and sometimes just walked.
“Put Central Park in your head!” I had said.
“What?” she’d asked.
“Can you picture every peaceful spot you’ve been in there? Vividly and clearly?”
“Yes,” said my daughter.
“The places where we both sat?”
I heard her say yes again.
“Now just put that picture in your mind, and slip into it. That’s going to be the place where you can disappear whenever you get stressed! Your own piece of Central Park or maybe the whole of it, where you can walk and run or just sit still and watch the swans!”
I know she did, and from her busy flat in Manhattan, where she’d watched cars whizzing down below, people hurrying to work, and tourists milling round Times Square, she created an oasis of calm in her head, and disappeared inside whenever she wanted a few moments of peace!
You can too! Create a beautiful place in your mind. Imagine the trees you want, a pond, a river or stream, sit awhile, put your feet into the gentle flowing water…
Something I also do is to feel my Lord sitting by me, talking to me, and listening quietly to problems I tell Him. Or even joys I share with Him!
You can to, in that peaceful place you create!
Today, in this extended lockdown, sit wherever you want and spend time in that peaceful park in your head..!

    1. BOB
I fully share your thoughts. This is echoed very well in the last lines of the poem Daffodils by William Wordsworth:

      I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
      Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
      And dances with the daffodils

  1. Wow the title itself is so soothing to soul and thank you Sir for this article. I can recall how I used to relish the moment of music of glistening leaves of peepal tree in our neighborhood and choras of doves.

  2. Imagination brings reallaty in our lives
Peaceful Joyful Happy day to start with
WOW When I was at my sister’s home in California .I used to experience it.

  3. It took me back to my visit to Central Park, the walks I had with dad to places here when he visited and the birds I heard this very morning.Reminded of the words of Daffodils was a bonus to the pleasure your article brought me.Psalm 46:10 came to mind too. I thank you Bobby. Today’s devotion by Pastor Calvin, our assistant pastor,in the setting of the compound Richmond Town Methodist Church has, went well with it as he read Luke1:28 and birds were heard, praising our Creator I’m sure.🎵😍

  4. Your picture in the article very beautiful! The lovely trellis bridge..the peaceful rivulet running under creating scenes of peace..the greenery of the trees..Peace is flowing like a river..flowing from the land of God..nice time for some soul searching..
