Death as Revenge..!

“Where is your appointment letter?”

I imagine asking that question of anyone who announces he is killing people on God’s behalf.

“Appointment letter?” he asks.

“Yes. Signed by the Almighty. Authorising you to murder His children.”

There would, I suspect, be considerable searching through pockets, followed by references to somebody’s speech, somebody’s sermon and somebody’s interpretation of heaven’s requirements.

But no appointment letter.

Reports of the terrifying incident aboard a flight to Tel Aviv describe a wounded captain and an alleged attempt by the copilot to crash the aircraft. Thankfully, 174 passengers survived. The motive remains unconfirmed, and we must allow investigators to establish it.

But if revenge was the intention, if innocent passengers were to die for deaths elsewhere, then a question needs asking.

Since when did God advertise a vacancy for an executioner?

Dear terrorist, God made the seas. He carved the mountains. Rivers flow through landscapes He fashioned. If He chooses to exercise judgment, He possesses resources considerably greater than your knife, your bomb or your burning resentment.

And you presume He is waiting helplessly for you?

“I shall avenge Your children, Lord!”

“By killing My other children?”

That is the conversation every self appointed defender of God ought to imagine before reaching for a weapon.

The passenger beside the window may be going home to her children. The elderly man across the aisle may be carrying medicines for his wife. The little boy asking for juice has probably never heard of the grievance for which you intend to kill him.

Yet you propose to turn their deaths into an offering?

Whoever taught you that needs to open his holy books again, this time without using anger as a bookmark.

But before the rest of us nod approvingly, perhaps we should examine our own smaller revenge departments.

“He insulted me. I will destroy his reputation.”

“She hurt me. Let her see what I can do.”

“They overlooked me. I shall make them regret it.”

Our aircraft may be a family, a friendship, an office or a religious committee. We grab the controls, push everyone into a nosedive, and call it teaching somebody a lesson.

Quite an expensive lesson when innocent people pay the fees.

The scriptures says, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

We read it, then behave as though God added, “Unless you can get there first.”

Walk away when anger demands immediate action. Seek justice through lawful means. Protect those in danger. But leave personal vengeance with God.

Trusting Him includes trusting His timing, His wisdom and His right to show mercy.

Even to someone you dislike. Especially to someone you dislike.

On that aircraft, courage helped preserve lives. That is worth remembering whenever hatred offers us the controls.

God does not need your suicide mission. Nor does He need my poisonous message.

Let Him handle judgment.

Our assignment is to stop adding to the casualties..!
