Plead My Cause..!

Whenever people feel cornered, they immediately begin searching for someone powerful to stand up for them. A political party. A famous lawyer. A celebrity. A wealthy businessman. Someone who can speak louder than their opponents.

It is rather like the little boy who, after being bullied in school, ran home shouting, “Daddy, tomorrow you come with me to class!” He was convinced that his father standing at the school gate would solve every problem.

Many of us have the same approach.

When Christians in India hear of another incident of persecution, another church being questioned, another believer being harassed, or another family facing hostility because of their faith, the first question often asked is, “Who will speak for us? Which political party is on our side? Who will plead our cause?”

It is a natural question.

But as I was reading Psalm 35, I realised David was asking a completely different question.

He did not first look for political influence. He did not search for powerful friends. He lifted his eyes to heaven and cried, “Plead my cause, O Lord.”

Then I came to verse 20, where he describes his enemies with remarkable accuracy.

“They speak not peace but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land.”

What a description.

A quiet people. A peaceful people. Yet they become the target of those who seem determined to stir conflict where none existed.

Throughout history, peaceful communities have often discovered that silence does not always protect them. Goodness is sometimes mistaken for weakness. Kindness is interpreted as surrender. Those who simply wish to worship, work, raise families and live quietly are suddenly forced to defend themselves against accusations they never imagined.

But David refuses to allow fear to have the final word.

Two Psalms later comes another extraordinary promise.

Psalm 37 verse 15 declares, “Their sword shall enter their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.”

Notice that David does not promise revenge.

He speaks of justice.

There is a world of difference.

Revenge belongs to angry people. Justice belongs to God.

History repeatedly reminds us that those who build their power on hatred, deceit and oppression eventually discover that the very weapons they trusted become the instruments of their own downfall. Empires have collapsed. Tyrants have fallen. Lies have unravelled. The God who watches quietly is never absent.

So perhaps our greatest strength is not found in political alliances, however useful they may sometimes appear. Our greatest strength is found in a prayer that has echoed through centuries of suffering.

“Plead my cause, O Lord.”

When heaven becomes your advocate, you discover that no earthly courtroom has the final verdict.

And somehow, that gives a quiet people the courage to remain quiet, the strength to remain faithful, and the confidence to leave the final judgment where it has always belonged, in the hands of God…!
