Pick Up the Baton and Run..!

Quite often I meet people who tell me about what they would have become if they had made some right decision years ago! “If only I had bought those shares Bob, I would be a millionaire now!”

“Had I only listened to my instincts and married her, I would have been so happy..”

“If only my husband hadn’t died and left me a widow,,”

And the ‘if onlys’ can be many!

May I whisper in your ear, the story of Wilma?

Wilma Rudolph was the 20th of 22 children born into a poor black family in Tennessee. As a child, she had polio and was forced to wear leg braces until she was nine. At twelve, she tried out for her school’s basketball team and failed. For the next year she practiced every day until she finally made the team.

A college athletics coach spotted her one day and talked her into letting him train her to be a sprinter. Her persistence earned her scholarship to Tennessee State University where she became a track star.

In 1960, she made the US Olympic team.

In the 100-metre sprint she had to face Jutta Heine of Germany, the world record holder. But Wilma won, and she did it again in the 200-metre event! Wilma’s third race was the 100-metre relay, where she again faced Jutta. Just as the baton was handed to Wilma she dropped it, giving Jutta the lead.

But her never-give-up spirit made her pick up the baton and take off in desperate pursuit. She caught the German runner in the last few strides and won the third gold medal, more than any other woman had won at that time.

Wilma became a grandmother and traveled the world for children’s causes, motivating them with her story. ‘I let them know that they can achieve it, as long as they’re willing to work for it!’

That’s the secret! If you are willing to work for it, you can pick up the baton and run again. Maybe you didn’t buy those shares, so what, build muscle by working hard for the same money you would have made!

You didn’t marry that woman you loved, so love the woman you married, and you’ve picked up the baton and are running towards victory!

What ever the ‘if only’ you have lying on the ground, staring at you with doleful eyes, pick it up and sprint! Wilma, a polio victim, won three gold medals!

What’s preventing you from doing the same? Pick up your baton, run and win..!

  1. Many of us are scared of failures because we are greatly bothered by what the society will think of us and thus miss the valuable lesson a failure can teach us. The branded failures of the society are the ones who thought out of box and became a success in their fields and contributed maximum to the society, which once castigated them.

Thanks Bob for one another gem.

  2. Hi Bob. I along with a lot of people I send your column to are enjoying it thoroughly. Nice light reading with beneficial insights. Thank you Bob. Keep penning.

  3. Hi Bobby, your banter is very much like batter for my spiritual food I digest in daily meditation. I don’t have to look anywhere else for inspiration and motivation. So keep on writing and I will pick up from where I drop.
