Afraid to Die..!

As India gets devastated with floods leading to landslides, I realized how quickly the ground we thought was solid under us, can get washed away.

We build fortunes and bank balances to fortify ourselves but finally we can never cheat death.

A prominent Delhi Banker was just about to sign an application for a large insurance policy when suddenly he hesitated. On second thoughts he said, “I believe I’d better give this matter some further consideration. Leave the data with me and come back in a week.”

“Very well sir,” said the insurance agent. “But I wish you would sign this memorandum for me.” With that, the agent held out his business card on the back of which he had written: “I agree to be alive and well one week from today!”

“I can’t sign such an agreement!” the banker exclaimed when he read the words. “How do I know I’ll be alive?” Hardly were the words out of his mouth when his expression changed as the meaning of his own words struck him. He hesitated a moment, then he quietly said: “give me that application. I’ll sign it.”

No one of us knows how long he will live. So it is important to remind ourselves that we know not the day nor the hour when death will be on us. It is so easy to forget that our life hangs by a thread, a thread that sooner or later must be broken.

Darkness upon darkness. Sorrow upon sorrow. Pain upon pain. Anguish upon anguish. That is what death appears to us.

Death is a fearful visitor, snatching away people who are precious to us and leaving us behind to mourn, grieve and wonder. It blocks the light that before had shined so freely and easily into our lives.

Whether we are facing the prospect of dying, or dealing with the death of a loved one, death can be devastating. It can sap our energy, change our plans, overwhelm our souls, alter our outlook, test our faith, steal our joy and challenge our assumptions about life’s purposes.

When we walk through the deep valley, we feel swallowed up by the shadow and come face to face with fear. Don’t we? The frantic emptiness of our loss threatens the comfort that previously originated from our trust in God, and so we grow afraid, afraid of our future, afraid to love, afraid to enjoy life again.

But there is a verse from the Psalms I cling onto:

“Even though I walk through the shadow of death,” says the Psalmist, “I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me”

There lies our hope. There lies our assurance, that even through the dark despair of death, God walks with us.

He provides comfort. He gives light again and He leads us out from the valley of darkness into everlasting light!

Afraid to die? There’s no need to be…!

  1. Truth about our lives in the backdrop of the landslips. Our God walks with us through the valley of death.

  2. OnChrist the Solid Rock let us stand. All other ground’s sinking sand. He’s our firm foundation. People change He doesn’t. Circumstances change. His promises don’t He’s Immanuel. He’s with us now and forever will be.

  3. Yes, the book of Psalms in the Bible addresses some of our deepest fears and provides comfort from above… In the Christian faith, death has been conquered by Christ’s death and resurrection… As 1 Corinthians 15:55 says: “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”… Thanks Bob for bringing hope through your columns. That’s what we need today!
