Prayer and Its Aftereffects…!

There is something about prayer we do not fully understand when we begin praying seriously. We imagine prayer is placing an order before God, and then waiting for delivery. Preferably same day delivery. With tracking number. And if possible, gift wrapped.

But prayer does not work that way.

The Bible says, “Pray without ceasing.” Bible In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul writes those three simple words that sound easy until life begins throwing chairs at you.

Because when you pray constantly, you also begin noticing something strange. God answers prayers in ways you never expected.

I remember walking into meetings praying, “Lord, handle this meeting. Give me wisdom. Give me diplomacy. Give me calmness.”

Then halfway through the meeting, instead of sounding diplomatic, I would suddenly say something blunt. Something uncomfortable. Something that made the room freeze like an air conditioner had exploded.

And afterwards I would walk out wondering whether God had quietly gone on vacation.

“Lord, what was that? I prayed for peace and I sounded like a television debate anchor!”

But later, sometimes weeks later, I would discover that the one uncomfortable sentence had changed the whole direction of the discussion. Somebody had finally faced reality. Somebody had finally spoken honestly. Somebody had stopped pretending.

And I would realise God had not abandoned me at all.

He simply knew the full road while I was only seeing the next speed breaker.

That is the difficult part about prayer. We want God to answer according to our preferred script. We want Him to protect our image, preserve our comfort, maintain our diplomacy and keep everybody smiling.

But God is interested in truth, growth and direction. Sometimes the answer to prayer is not comfort. Sometimes it is disruption.

Even in personal relationships I have seen this happen. We pray for healing and suddenly hidden issues come out into the open. We pray for strength and suddenly life becomes harder. We pray for courage and immediately meet a situation requiring courage.

And we complain.

But perhaps the prayer was already being answered.

Prayer is ours. The aftereffects are God’s.

Once we understand this, prayer becomes peaceful. We stop trying to control outcomes and start trusting the One who sees tomorrow clearly. We stop treating prayer like a magic formula and begin treating it like a relationship.

And then “pray without ceasing” no longer sounds frightening.

It sounds natural.

Because you are no longer praying to control God.

You are praying because you finally trust Him. And you realise that finally, praying is all about surrender…!
