Is Your Captain on Board?

Somewhere in a quiet naval harbour, a young naval lieutenant stood tall, chest out, uniform crisp, as he guided a massive ship out into open waters. Every turn was precise, every command by the book. The vessel moved like poetry in motion, slicing through the harbour as though it had rehearsed this very exit a hundred times.

When the ship finally cleared the harbour and steadied itself in deeper waters, the young man allowed himself a small, satisfied smile. He had done it. Perfectly.

Then came a message from the shore. “Young man, you did an excellent job by the book… but next time make sure you set  sail, after your captain is on board.”

That must have stung.

Because suddenly, perfection did not seem so perfect anymore.

And I wonder how often we do exactly that in life.

We steer our ships well. We follow procedures. We work long hours. We make decisions with confidence and even competence. From the outside, everything looks impressive. People may even applaud. But somewhere, quietly, a message echoes within us, asking a far more important question.

Was your Captain on board?

In the rush of living, we often forget that life is not just about steering correctly, but about surrendering control. There is a difference between doing things right and doing the right things under the right authority. One gives us success. The other gives us peace.

The Bible puts it rather beautifully in Proverbs 3:5 to 6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Notice it does not say plan well and God will admire you. It says acknowledge Him, and He will direct you.

Which means the Captain is not just a passenger. He is the one meant to give the orders.

Even Jesus, at a moment far more intense than any harbour exit, paused and prayed in Luke 22:42, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless, not my will, but thine, be done.” If there was ever a moment to steer one’s own course, this was it. Yet, He chose surrender over control.

And that is where many of us struggle.

We want God’s blessings, but not always His direction. We want calm seas, but prefer to hold the wheel. We want success, but sometimes without submission.

So, we end up like that young sailor. Efficient, capable, even admirable. But missing the one presence that truly matters.

Because life is not merely about navigating harbours. It is about reaching destinations we were never wise enough to chart on our own.

And the truth is simple.

You may sail well without your Captain for a little while.

But as the waves turn rough in your life, and the guns start firing, not necessarily over the Hormuz Strait,  you will realise it is well worth having your Captain on board..!
