Traditionally, the star that we light for Christmas is pulled down on the 6th of Jan, the date when the wisemen a few years later arrived to see the Baby Jesus. The star started shining from the night Jesus was born, and the three wise men who stories say were from Persia, Arabia and India, started off on their journey following the star!
I am fascinated by the wiseman who originated from India.
“Where are you going?” his wife tucking her sari and watching him saddle his camel must have asked.
“To see God!” he must have replied, his eyes alight with anticipation.
“But we believe God is within us?” she must have cried.
“No,” he must have whispered, “Only with the birth and finally with the death of this babe will God be able to dwell within us!”
She must have looked at his intellectual head, his physical body, certainly not fit for a long haul of camel riding and said, “Why this long journey?”
“To welcome Him into a lost world,” he must have replied, “Finally, we have a definite hope!”
And then from within the confines of her home, she must have heard him whistling, a sound she had not heard ever from the lips of her husband, and must have said to herself, “All the philosophy and spiritual matters my husband has delved into so far, has never produced such happiness!”
But I wonder what happened to his whistling after he saw the Babe and returned? How is it he never came home and spread the good news?
Was he disappointed along with the other two when they saw a cattle shed, instead of a palace? Were they dismayed to see no heavenly army, and no divine revolution?
What did his wife say to the neighbours when he came back?
“Did your husband meet God?” asks a neighbour.
“The star stopped over a manger!”
“Manger?”
“Yes, poor hubby, he sure didn’t expect that. He gave the present he carried for the baby, so did the other two, but they’ve decided to keep quiet about what they saw.”
They certainly kept quiet because no mention was made in any of the countries they came from about what they saw, and they certainly did not try to get others to believe in the Manger birth. What a loss, because it was just a matter of time before most of the world accepted Him as their saviour.
Are we doing the same?
As we put away the star this year, are we also putting away the phenomenal message behind His birth? Are we forgetting to tell the world that God’s love for us is so great, that He allowed himself to be born in a dirty stable, to die for our wicked ways, to provide a ‘shortcut’ for our salvation?
The whole of our country has witnessed Christmas in some form or other from us, but like the Indian wiseman are we also keeping the message a secret twixt us and our plastic crib camel?
