A few years ago, maybe it still happens today, transport and traffic police in Mumbai, met taxi drivers to tell them to be present near bars during the Christmas season up to the New Year period at night so tipplers could be dropped home

I picture a tippler leaving the bar, swaying from side to side today. He sways to the door, and a taxi driver greets him, “Taxi sir?”

“Yes, I am filled with alcoholic spirits, hic, hic, I cannot walk, hic, lead me to your taxi!”

“Come sir, come into my taxi and let me take you to the Christmas spirit!”

“I have taken a lot of those spirits from the bottle today!”

“Ah sir,” says the taxi driver with a twinkle in his eye, “It was to get rid of having to rely on the bottle, on drugs and other props that the first Christmas happened more than two thousand years ago!”

“I..I don’t need the bottle?” asks the passenger, surprised.

“No, sir, the baby born in a manger, the little boy child called Jesus came to fill you with something different, tell me, why are you drunk sir?”

“I am drunk because I want to feel happy at least with this liquor in me! I am drunk because my life has reached a point of no return, I feel frustrated and impotent!”

“Sir, you are crying!”

“I cry, because though I have a wife and family, I am lonely. Nobody wants to listen to me!”

And suddenly the taxi seems to rise into the air.

“Where are you going?” asks the drunk passenger.

“Back in time to Bethlehem! There sir, what do you see?”

“A little baby wrapped in hay! But what strange feeling is this? I have never felt this sense of security as if the child in the manger is reaching out to hold my hand! What a feeling of peace!”

“That sir, “said the strange taxi driver as he drove his cab back to the city, “Is the Spirit of Christmas! A spirit that will fill your heart and soul and mind and give you the strength of an eagle and a joy beyond your understanding!”

That night as the passenger walked away from the cab into his home, his wife looked at him, and said, “You look happy, what spirit have you drunk this time?”

“The Christmas Spirit!” he said, as he smiled at her, “Found in a Bethlehem manger, with a baby called Jesus!”

If you wonder who that taxi driver is, don’t search for him. Just open the Holy Scriptures and read about the most incredible birth in history, where God was born in a manger, so that His spirit, can be invited in by you, and you will never ever need the props of drinks, or drugs or other addictive habits, as the Christmas spirit fulfills every need..!
