No Prophet from Galilee…!

How famous Galilee is today!

From Galilee came Jesus, who changed the world and changed our lives.

But what did the scribes and Pharisees think of Galilee? In John 7: 52, they said with disdain about Jesus, ‘Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

That’s it. They did not want to go farther, they did not want to listen to His teachings, they closed their ears with the words that nothing good could come from somebody who came from that area.

City people from Jerusalem, looking down at a rustic.

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

How often I’ve wondered at our love for doctorates! Yes, I respect a man or woman who goes into deep research and contributes through his or her thesis towards enlightening others, but those who pick a Dr title just for the sake of showing off are like the pharisees who loved to wear amulets and other external signs to show they were superior to those around them.

As a writer, I have found some of the best pieces of writing coming from ten and eleven year old children, and others with degrees in literature and journalism boring those around with their verbal garbage. Those children have been blessed with a gift, just as simple preachers and speakers are anointed by God.

If those Pharisees and Jerusalem high brows could have listened to the man from Galilee, they would certainly have gone home realising he was the Messiah. But they didn’t, they closed their ears, feeling nothing good could come out of a Galilean’s mouth.

Which gives us something to think about this Sunday: Open our ears to listen, even if the speaker doesn’t have a degree, even if he or she comes from a village and also if it is a child speaking.

Because when God came as Man to earth, He did not choose learned men and women or academics from the Jewish universities to follow Him, but chose the lowliest of the low; fishermen, sweaty and swearing at each other, tax collectors who were outcasts, and even His birth announced not in the synagogues of Jerusalem, but on hillsides to lowly shepherds.

The University of God, blesses us with more learning than any on earth. I do remember, when as a youngster in my early thirties I was sent a lawyer’s notice by some very influential people through the most powerful lawyer in the city. I went to some of the top lawyers to ask them to send a reply, but they were afraid. Then I remember praying as I walked down the wooden rickety stairs near the High Court in Mumbai,  “God you gave David pebbles and a simple slingshot to kill a mighty giant, give me words to reply to this notice!”

God did.

I wrote back and won.

Are you one of those laughing at someone from ‘Galilee’? Stop, before you lose a great anointed message God has for you…!
