A favourite Sunday school chorus of my childhood was about the wise man building his house on the rock, and the foolish man on sand. Maybe because it was an action song and showed the effects of wind and rain, we loved it, but today as I thought of that song, I realised how important those verses are for us.
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
What Jesus was saying was everybody who built their life on the words He was preaching would enter the kingdom of heaven. But the others would face hell fire.
Today, we have many who profess to be Christians. But are their lives built on all Jesus preached?
They love to keep a vigil if their church is vandalised. They are angry if a Bible is desecrated. They fly into a rage if a Christian mass or service is disrupted. All very good and noble reactions.
But are they building their lives on the Word of God, the Bible, and all that Jesus preached?
Are their lives revolving round the powerful words of the Beatitudes, or are they only cultural Christians who stand up not for truth and honesty, and also for integrity, but stand up only if faith is ridiculed or lampooned.
There’s no rock there.
Because, if you like a wiseman are building your house on the rock, then it’s not crosses being vandalised and steeples being pulled down which should get you angry but your slipping into the mucky marshes of sin that should get your concern.
How’s the ground beneath your feet? Is it rock? Is it sand? Can you feel the Bible’s words echoing in all you say and do?
Check the soil on which your life stands. Is it built around the principles of Christ?
Because if it isn’t then there’s going to be thunder and a crash and the house you’ve built on sand will come crashing down.
I can hear the children voices singing the wise men song, but today I ask myself, to check the foundation again. Is it rock or sand?
