โOur engineers burned the midnight oil to produce this car,โ said the MD as he showed me into his factory in the outskirts of the city, โand after this lockdown, this is just the car for your highly strained pocket!โ
โAnd this car will cost less than a lakh?โ I asked.
โLess than fifty thousand!โ said the beaming managing director as he took me to the workshop area. โThereโs it! The cheap car the whole country wants!โ
โItโs beautiful!โ I chortled.
โThe paint weโve used is the latest in oven finish technology,โ said the MD proudly. โThe gloss will retain its sheen even after a month.โ
โThere must be somewhere you have cut costs to price a model so lowโ I whispered in disbelief.
โSafety belts with imported buckles!โ continued the MD.
โSuperbโ I said in awe.
โNo nonsense seats that will wear out the toughest butt, before wearing itself out!โ
โUnbelievable!โ I exclaimed.
โFibreglass bumpers that will not damage the car in front!โ
โNor the car behind!โ I shouted with glee.
โHeadlights with screw-on-bulbs!โ
โBrilliant!โ
โTinted glasses!โ
โAwesome!โ
The managing director of the automobile company looked at me with unconcealed pride. โThis is what the nation has been crying for!โ he said. โOur shares will hit the roof!โ
โYou will be listed on the New York exchange too,โ I said.
โPeople will praise us for being thrifty but nifty,โ he said, โthey will now have money left to put in their banks!โ
โYes,โ I shouted.
โWeโll teach a new global philosophy, that cheap is cool!โ laughed the MD as he gave me a high five. โWill you mention this in your column?โ
โOfcourse,โ I said.
โLetโs go to my office for some champagne!โ
โLetโs take the car for a spin,โ I said eagerly.
โA what?โ asked the puzzled managing director.
โFor a drive,โ I explained pleasantly.
โIt canโt be driven,โ said the MD slowly. โFor that youโll have to install an engine.โ
โIt doesnโt have an engine?โ I asked incredulously.
โWhat do you expect for fifty thousand rupees?โ shouted the MD as he pushed me out of the workshop and onto the road outside. โA car with an engine!โ
And as you chuckle, think about how we ourselves are fooled: โDid you light and wave the candle around on Sunday for nine minutes without asking about protective gear for doctors, millions of testing kits for the country, thousands of ventilators which will soon be needed, and how the government was going to handle unemployment, hunger and recession?
Or were you, like the rest, fooled by a fancy car with no engine?

Well put Bob ! I neither lit a candle nor did I switch off the lights !!
You can fool some of the people all the time ….
These theatrics are only to cover up real issues.

Thought Provoking

Beautifully said…Absolutely right..!!!!!classic..!!!!
A thoughtless voter and a blind follower makes a fool of himself and a wreck of his country.
But one should never argue with a fool ! He will drag you down to his level and beat you with his experience!
Your article was beautiful and Reader’s comments too good! Did not have anything else to say!
Burning a candle was just solidarity..we are one! The govt is doing it’s best and people are helping each other.Even America has extended aid to India. What is there to criticize…let us do our bit to help
Criticism is essential to look at it from a different perspective and impartial.
It is a way of creativity
Hitting the nail on the head …a welcome habit ๐๐
