Peck Less and Smile More..!

Every morning, as I step out onto my terrace garden with a fistful of birdseed, I’m greeted by a delightful scene. There they are — Mr. and Mrs. Sparrow, hopping together like an old married couple on their morning walk.

I scatter the seeds, and sure enough, the two sparrows land side by side. And oh, what teamwork! The male, all puffed up like a self-important politician, finds a tasty morsel and proudly hops over to his wife, dropping it before her like a suitor presenting chocolates. She accepts it, of course, but not without a bossy chirp or two, probably reminding him she preferred something crunchier. And what does Mr. Sparrow do? He stands there, feathers ruffled and shoulders slumped like a husband realizing he picked the wrong brand of tea from the store.

Yet, a few moments later, I swear I see a smile spreading on his beak. A feathered grin, as if he’s saying, “Ah well, happy wife, happy life!”

Watching them every morning makes me think — how wise these birds are. No family court needed, no divorce lawyers circling like vultures, no complicated “irreconcilable differences” scribbled on paperwork.

Just two tiny birds working it out, day after day.

And yet, we humans, supposedly blessed with superior intelligence, seem to struggle with this simple wisdom. Divorce rates climb, and loneliness thrives. Somewhere along the way, we forget what the sparrows know instinctively — that life is best lived in pairs.

“But what about tough times?” some may argue. Well, if you could hear Mrs. Sparrow some mornings, you’d know there are plenty of disagreements in the avian world too! I’ve watched her peck fiercely at her partner, scolding him for who-knows-what. Perhaps he forgot to fluff up the nest or spent too long chirping with the guys next door. But never once does Mr. Sparrow fly away in a huff. Instead, he flutters beside her, letting her vent, before the two of them return to their breakfast routine, pecking away at scattered seeds like nothing happened.

I can’t help but chuckle. Isn’t that the secret to lasting love? Not expecting life to be perfect, but knowing how to stay together through the imperfect moments?

Too often, we let our pride or stubbornness break what just needed a little patience and forgiveness. The sparrows seem to know this better than we do.

So next time you see a pair of birds outside your window, just think, that if a God above created these sparrows to live as a pair, then isn’t that expected from us too? See how they fuss, bicker, and boss each other around — and yet still go to sleep in the same nest every night.

There’s wisdom in their wings, a lesson in their love.

And maybe, just maybe, if we learned to peck less and smile more, we might find ourselves less lonely and a whole lot happier too..!
