Panic and Your Golden Calf..!

In those times we panic, how quickly we toss our faith away: “Our little boy’s fever is not coming down!” whispers the terrified mother.

“Wait, I’ll be back in a moment,” shouts the father as he runs to the window and tosses his Bible out!

Sounds like a joke, isn’t it? But think deeply, isn’t that what many of us do? Let’s look at history: Remember the joyful children of Israel, after they’d crossed the Red Sea? They’d seen one of the greatest miracles of all time, and then God decided to give them the Ten Commandments and invited Moses up the mountain to be with Him. When Moses took a long time to come down, the people got worried, and what did they do? 32 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods[a] who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.” So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

Their quick fix was a golden calf! They did not think to go down on their knees and pray to their God, who had just shown them the biggest miracle of all time, to bring Moses down safely. No, before you could say Jack Robinson or the Hebrew equivalent, they had all thrown their gold earrings and other ornaments and with the help of the brother of Moses, Aaron they fashioned a new god; a golden calf.

What golden calf are you running to as you panic during such situations?

“What’s going to happen after the elections?”

“How can I live with this alcoholic?”

“How am I going to pass my exams?”

“I’ve got cancer!”

Are we running to the window to throw our Bible out? Or are we opening it and finding that the God who parted the Red Sea will take us through this as well..!

  1. Yes it is during the trials and storms of life when we need to hold on to our faith all the more. When the going gets tough, the tough must get going and not give up, for we are made tough in Jesus Christ through His death and resurrection; this makes us overcomers and victors and not victims. ‘In the world you will have tribulation, but take courage, I have overcome the world.’ (John 16:33)

  2. In Isaiah is written, ‘Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee because he trusteth in Thee O Lord.’ The Prince of Peace keeps us healthy in body too for the state of the mind does affect the body’s state too.

  3. Faith weakens when trials and tribulations are experienced in ones life, but holding on to the faith during these times is essential, enduring for a while will undoubtedly achieve us a reward we could have never imagined…like the Christ said; even if we had faith the size of a mustard seed, if we said to a mountain to throw itself into the sea, it would happen…the Hebrews of Israel at that time didn’t walk by faith but instead walked by sight, that’s the reason for the deminishing of their little faith.
