Narendra Modi: Speak Out..!
Oh yes, I was nearly convinced!
This happened on the eve of the Gujarat elections, as I was going for my morning walk and was joined by two young brothers, “Bob what do you think of Modi?”
“I hope he loses,” I said, “I have no love for someone who allowed so many in his state to be massacred!”
“No Bob, you’re wrong,” said the younger of the two, “D’you know how much he’s done for Gujarat? You heard how far the state’s progressed in the last five years?”
Like I said I was nearly convinced as I listened to those two.
It was a couple of days later my car was caught in a traffic jam that I told my driver to push his was through from the side which was occupied by people who preferred walking on the road than on the pavement. A ruffian like fellow in front refused to move aside and when my driver honked, walked over to my side, looked in and told me, he would not move because he was going to a religious festival!
“So what?” I asked, “don’t walk on the road!”
“You are not of my faith!” shouted the man showing his fist at me, “so don’t try to make me move!”
My driver smartly drove the car away, but as I sat in the back I pondered over what the man had meant, I remembered a poem written by a n early supporter of Hitler; a man by the name of Niemoller. In 1934 Niemöller seeing what Hitler was actually doing started reacting against Hitler and was thus imprisoned at Sachsenhausen and later at Dachua concentration camps.
This is his poem:
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent; I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats
I remained silent; I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists
I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent; I wasn’t a Jew.
When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out!
Like I said I was nearly convinced as I listened to those two well meaning brothers that morning, and I’m sure many in the world find it convenient to listen to such arguments, but one day you’ll find out:
“Spare me I’m one of you!” you’ll shout.
“You’re older, we’re younger!”
“You drive a car, we have none!”
“You’re dialect is different!”
“Your thinking is different!”
Then you’ll know it’s come full circle; there’s no one left to speak for you..!
