Road Accident..!
Nowhere else in the world is such quick action taken after a road accident than in India!
I be witness to this the other day:
“Accident!” screams my driver, jumping out of the car, with agility I’ve never witnessed before, he runs across the road, jumps over divider, dodges a speeding truck and arrives at the other side. Man! I be mighty impressed with his quickness and sense of responsibility and mentally decide to give him a raise.
I get out of the car to help; luckily I don’t.
The crowd surrounding the accident spot is thick and dense as I push my way through to help my driver in his task; his face be red with effort he be putting in, I watch his hands they be full of blood, so also the hands of the other bystanders, “Oh my god!” I say to myself, “this must be a bad scene!”
And it is.
“Take this!” shouts my driver and I see his hands raised high, then with strength I never knew he possessed he brings fist down.
“And this!” shouts a rickshaw driver who like my driver has abandoned his vehicle.
“One from me!” shouts a truck driver and I watch aghast as they bring their fists down on a poor hapless fellow trying to shield himself as blows are reined on him.
“One minute!” I shout, “what are you doing? He’s hurt, take him to hospital!”
“Where you also in his car?” asks mean truck driver raising fist to hit me.
“No, no, he was in mine!” shouts my driver in time, not wanting sahib who pays his salary to get beaten.
“Then get out of the way!” shouts rickshaw man and pushes me out of the crowd.
“Uncle use this stone!” says a little boy from the slum nearby as he runs into the crowd with a deadly looking brick.
“Excellent!” smiles the truck driver giving little fellow a pat then using brick sickeningly.
I walk out of the crowd then hear groaning; I look around and see it is from a man lying on the side, bleeding profusely.
“What’s happened to him?” I ask rushing to his side.
“He the one hit by the car!” says a bystander.
“We have to attend to him!” I shout.
“Justice must be done first!” says bystander glaring at me, then running into the crowd to have his share of action.
“Driver!” I shout, “help me take this fellow to the hospital!”
My driver, he look at me as if I be crazy, “Sir do you know what this fellow did?” he asks and brings his fist down on the other fellow in the middle.
“Help me lift him!” I shout.
“Why aren’t you joining us? Whose side are you on?” ask burly truck driver looking at me menacingly.
Suddenly the crowd starts sauntering away. “Wait!” I shout.
“Sir, police are coming,” says my driver pushing me into my car.
“But the accident victim?”
“Police’s problem!” says my driver, “we were quick weren’t we sir?”
Like I said nowhere else in the world except in India do you find such quick action after an accident..!
